Leading parotid expert, Dr. Larian, and his team of specialists are committed to using the most advanced and minimally-invasive tests available to provide a definitive diagnosis of parotid diseases, conditions and infections.
MRI Scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging - or MRI - is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to visualize structures of the body in detail. A safe and painless test, the use of magnetic and radio waves eliminates exposure to x-rays and other damaging forms of radiation.
An MRI is considered the best way to identify salivary gland tumors, as it can identify their exact location, dimensions and relationship to the surrounding structures.
CT Scan
A CT -- or computed tomography -- scan is an imaging method that uses x-rays to create cross-sectional pictures of the body. It creates detailed images that can be used for a variety of functions -- including to diagnose an infection, guide a surgeon to the right location during a biopsy, identify masses and parotid tumors, study blood vessels and identify salivary stones.
During the test, you will lie on a narrow table that slides into the center of the CT scanner. Once inside, the x-ray beam of the machine will rotate around you, and a computer will create detailed images of the area being scanned.
Fine Needle Biopsy
A fine needle biopsy is considered the best technique for detecting or ruling out the presence of a benign or cancerous parotid tumor. When performed correctly, it is an extremely accurate method of providing a definitive diagnosis with a false negative rate of less than five percent.
Performed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort, this procedure involves the use of a thin, hollow needle to remove fluid and cells from the growth. After extracting the tissue sample, Dr. Larian and his team will then evaluate it for abnormal cells, disease or infection.
